The Asus X553MA-SX858D laptop is a budget device. Asus calls it a ‘User-centric 15 inch laptop for everyday use’ and that is exactly what it is. The design is a typical laptop one with a chunky base and a thin-dish display. The concentric circles design on the top affords it a premium look. Though Asus has listed it as available in four colours on their website, only Black colour is available in India.
On the inside is the one-piece, ergonomically crafted Chiclet keyboard. The keys are spaced out in an improved layout ensuring speed and typing accuracy. All these factors combine to reduce finger-fatigue even after long sessions of typing. The multipoint touchpad is precise and equipped with ‘Smart Gesture’ technology which supports a range of touch commands like pinch to zoom in/out, scrolling and taps simulating Windows touch-screen functions.
The Asus X553MA-SX858D laptop features a 15.6 inch (39.62 cm) backlit widescreen LED display with a 16:9 ratio and a resolution of 1366 X 768. This is a perfect ratio for watching movies as well as for working on those extra-wide Excel sheets. Asus’s ‘Splendid’ display engine enables the user to switch between three preset modes or fine-tune the display in Manual mode.
This results in more vibrant colours and clear image quality for productivity and entertainment. The screen resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels feels a bit dated as compared to other notebooks available in the market. But it is excusable here because this is a budget device available price for less than Rs. 20,000/-. That seems to be the theme here and the same applies to the VGA webcam sitting atop the display. Just don’t expect to have crystal-clear video calls.
The Asus X553MA-SX858D laptop is powered by an Intel Celeron processor running at 2.25 GHz. This processor is adequate for doing day-to-day tasks like internet surfing, typing out documents and watching movies, smoothly. Just don’t expect to be able to play high-end, graphics-intensive games on this one.
Multi-tasking is handled quite well, which is good for productivity tasks where the user has to constantly cycle between applications. The SX858D features Asus’s ‘Super Hybrid Engine II’ technology, which supports ‘instant-on’ start where the laptop boots up almost instantaneously from standby. Asus claims that this notebook can remain in stand by for two straight weeks.
The data gets automatically backed up when the battery drops to 5% charge. Files and tasks are kept in memory waiting to be retrieved once the laptop boots up. The Super Hybrid Engine II also optimizes battery life by utilizing various power modes as required by the task at hand. Despite this, the claimed battery life is only 3 hours which is a bit disappointing.
The laptop also features one USB 3.0 port which is ten times faster than USB 2.0. That’s why it’s a pity, and surprising, that there are only two USB ports available on the device with one of them being USB 2.0.

The Asus X553MA-SX858D laptop is a competent laptop which does extremely well in day-to-day tasks. Those looking for a productivity tool for everyday use will find this one a good value for money, which makes this an ideal laptop for students and small businesses.
The premium look and the big widescreen display work in its favour. Serious gamers and artists should look elsewhere though. Some features like the USB 3.0 are class-leading while some like the 1366 X 768 resolution and the 2 GB of RAM hold in back. All in all, it is a no-frills productivity device.
