Zen Mobiles is usually not a name associated with smartphones. Zen Mobile is a home-grown brand which started out as feature phone makers and is now one of the major smartphone makers in the Indian market. From 2009, when the company was established, till now Zen Mobile is still going strong on their mission to “develop & deliver most innovative mobility products that contribute to every citizen’s growth and establishes a competitive advantage for the brand and enhances profitability.”
This is the review of the Zen Admire Thrill here. This is one such smartphone which is affordable and enables smart connectivity for the people. It is a good-looking phone with a matte finish and curved edges. It is powered by a quad-core processor and supports 4G networks in India. The Zen Admire Thrill is available at a price of Rs. 4,390/- in online stores. Let us take a closer look at this phone.
The Zen Admire Thrill is made of plastic to keep its weight and price down. The Admire Thrill is a curvy handset. The back panel opens up to reveal the battery, the dual SIM slots, and the microSD card slot. The back panel has a premium-looking matte finish with Zen branding on the lower part. The loudspeaker is located at the bottom-right corner. The loudspeaker grill is made of a rectangular grid of drilled holes. There are two raised plastic nubs which ensure that the speaker does not get muffled when placed on a flat surface.
The 5.0-megapixel autofocus camera sits in a big circular cut-out on the top-left corner flanked by the LED flash. The camera protrudes slightly from the phone. At the front, the 4.5” display takes up most of the space. The earpiece is located at the top of the display flanked by the 2.0-megapixel front camera on its right. The three capacitive Android navigation buttons sit below the display. These are not backlit. The USB port and the 3.5mm headphone jack are located on the top edge of the phone.
The Zen Admire Thrill sports a 4.5” TFT display outputting at a resolution of 480 x 854 pixels which give it a pixel density of 218 PPI. The display is sufficiently bright and the colours are well-saturated. The display is quite reflective which affects its outdoor visibility. Overall, this is a decent display justifying its inclusion at this price point.
The Zen Admire Thrill has a 5.0-megapixel primary auto-focus camera which is supported by a single-LED flash. The camera is a decent performer. The pictures clicked in daylight under ideal lighting conditions are clear and well-lit. Photos clicked in low-light conditions do not fare so well.
There is a lot of noise and smudging and the pictures come out dark. At the front, the Zen Admire Thrill sports a 2.0-megapixel camera. This is adequate for decent selfies and the occasional video calls provided they are done in well-lit rooms or outdoors.
The Zen Admire Thrill is powered by the Spreadtrum 6832 quad-core processor running at 1.3 GHz. It is supported by 1GB RAM and 8GB built-in storage. The storage can be expanded up to 32GB via the microSD card slot. The phone supports 4G networks but does not support VOLTE. The included RAM is barely enough for the smooth functioning of the phone. The 8GB storage can be increased up to 32 GB via the microSD card slot.
The 1750mAh Li-Ion battery powers the phone for 2.5 hours of talk time and 170 hours of standby time. The 8GB storage feels insufficient after some time as it tends to fill up fast as more and more apps are installed on the phone. The Zen Admire Thrill features Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for wireless connectivity. There is a built-in FM radio for entertainment on-the-go. The phone runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box.

The Zen Admire Thrill is an affordable device with lower-end mid-range specifications meant to be a first-time buyer’s smartphone. While it may not in the specifications race, it certainly can be a middling smartphone with enough features to justify its ‘smart-phone’ tag.
