Vivo is a relatively new entrant into the mobile market, especially in India. But in a short period of time, it has won over people with its reasonable pricing and some unique selling points for their smart phones. The Vivo V5s concentrates on selfies and selfie-lovers. It packs in a humongous 20.0-megapixel resolution camera with its own dedicated flash, something Vivo calls as ‘Moonlight Selfie’. The selfie camera also supports various modes and features like ‘Group Selfie’ and ‘Bokeh Mode’. Even the primary camera is 13.0-megapixel with PDAF (Phase Detection Auto Focus) which allows for faster focus and quick captures.
The rest of the specifications are more ‘regular’. The 5.5” HD display features very slim bezels at the sides and helps in handling and daily usage of the phone. The unibody construction of the phone gives it a sense of solidity and premium looks. The Vivo V5s is available at a price of Rs. 16,750/- in online stores. Let us take a closer look at this smartphone through this review.
The design of the Vivo V5s is reminiscent of some other phones. It certainly looks premium and the unibody design carries the effect forward even while handling the phone. The finish of the phone is flawless and the backside of the phone is metal, which further reinforces the premium feel. The back of the device carries the Vivo branding in the middle and there’s some regulatory information printed at the bottom of the back panel. At the top, there’s a circular camera cut-out for the 13.0-megapixel camera which is flanked by the LED flash. Both of them sit flush inside the body of the smartphone. All the edges of the Vivo V5s are curved, which offer a better grip on the phone which is slightly slippery on account of the metal build. There are plastic antenna lines which border the top and bottom edges of the back-side.
They are painted to match the body colour and almost blend into the back. The power button and the volume rocker are located on the right edge of the phone. The bottom edge features the 3.5mm headphone jack, the primary microphone, the micro-USB port and the loudspeaker grill. The left edge carries the dual-SIM cards slot which is accessible with a SIM eject tool. Over at the front, the 5.5” HD display dominates. The earpiece sits atop the display and is flanked by the proximity and ambient light sensors, the 20.0-megapixel selfie camera and the selfie flash. The fingerprint scanner sits below the display which also acts as the home button. All-in-all, the review of the design of the Vivo V5s points to a very well-made device with small conveniences like the front-mounted fingerprint scanner.
The Vivo V5s sports a 5.5” IPS LCD HD display which has a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and a pixel density of 267PPI. It carries the usual aspect ratio of 16:9 which is perfect for multimedia consumption as well as minor productivity tasks. Though the display is not as sharp as some of the phones found in this price-range, it a beautiful display with well-saturated colours and wide viewing angles.
The display is amply bright, with very good contrast levels which helps in outdoor visibility. It is capable of displaying 16 million colours, giving it a wide colour gamut. All-in-all, though this is not a pixel-packed display, it is a bright and beautiful display which justifies its inclusion on this phone.
The primary camera on the Vivo V5s is a 13.0-megapixel shooter which comes with a single LED flash. It features a f/2.2 aperture and comes with a plethora of shooting modes. The images pack in quite a good amount of details and the images captured in daylight or under ideal lighting conditions, turn out exceptionally well. Night-time shots or images captured under low-light conditions exhibit a certain amount of noise, and even smudging at extreme levels. But most of the low-light shots are usable.
The real highlight of the Vivo V5s is the selfie camera which has a whopping 20.0-megapixel resolution and its own flash. This camera is even brighter than the primary camera at f/2.0 aperture. This is bound to make the selfie lovers happy and they are exactly the consumer group which is targeted by this phone. The front camera also comes loaded with lots of shooting modes, including the ‘Beautify’ mode. Images captured exhibit an amazing amount of details and the selfie flash lights up the shots beautifully in any lighting conditions.
The Vivo V5s is powered by a MediaTek MT6750 octa-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 processor which is supported by the Mali-T860MP2 GPU. This is supported by 4GB RAM and 64GB built-in storage, which can be further increased up to 256GB through the hybrid dual-SIM slot. This setup runs the phone smoothly and there aren’t any lags or stutters in day-to-day usage. Casual games will run smoothly and some high-end games will also run and will be quite playable.
Though the setup is decidedly mid-range, the real-world performance belies the fact. For its price-point, The Vivo V5s is an extremely well-performing smartphone. It supports Indian 4G bands and also supports USB OTG feature which is a very handy feature to have for productivity tasks. The 5.5” touchscreen performs admirably and delivers smooth usage with hardly any missed touches. Overall, the Vivo V5s is a smooth performer in spite of its mid-range specifications.
