Samsung is one of the pioneers in the world of smartphones. Samsung has always been the market leader in the flagship phones segment, but not so much in mid-range phones. Samsung’s mid-range phones used to be full of compromises which were hard to justify at their price point. But all that is changing now and Samsung is taking the mid-range segment more seriously. Now, Samsung mid-rangers are made of metal, feature full HD displays and generally offer more value for the buyer’s money at an affordable price. The Samsung Galaxy C7 Pro is one such mid-ranger which comes with a premium metal build quality and a big bright 1080px screen.
It even packs in a fingerprint scanner and a dual LED flash, features which were unheard of in a mid-range device only a couple of years back. The big 5.7” Super-AMOLED display is gorgeous, with super saturated colours and ample brightness. The generous 3300mAh battery powers this phone to last through the day even with heavy usage. The Samsung Galaxy C7 Pro is available at a price of Rs. 25,990/- in online stores. Let us take an in-depth look at this smartphone through this review.
The Samsung Galaxy C7 Pro is a full metal unibody smartphone which features a spectacular build quality and highlights Samsung’s attention to detail. The back of this smartphone is all metal. There are two sets of three horizontal grooves running across its entire width, one set at the top and one set at the bottom. There’s prominent Samsung branding featured in the middle. Above that is the rounded-square cut-out for the 16.0-megapixel camera which is flanked by the dual LED flash. The camera module protrudes slightly from the body. The power button and the hybrid dual SIM tray are located on the right edge and the volume up and volume down buttons are located on the left edge of the phone.
The front side is dominated by the 5.7” Super-AMOLED display. The earpiece is located above the display and is flanked by the 16.0-megapixel selfie camera and proximity sensor. Below the display is Samsung’s traditional home button, which now houses the fingerprint reader. This is the most convenient position for the fingerprint reader, front, and center. The other two navigation keys are touch-capacitive types and are backlit. The 3.5mm headphone jack and the reversible USB Type C connector are located on the bottom edge of the phone along with the loudspeaker grill and the primary microphone.
All the edges of the phone are rounded and the sides taper towards the edges. This helps in getting a secure grip on the Samsung Galaxy C7 pro, which is a big phone. The build quality is impeccable and the full metal build gives it a very premium look and feel. The Samsung Galaxy C7 Pro stands up to the scrutiny of the design review exceptionally well.
The Samsung Galaxy C7 Pro features a gorgeous 5.7” super-AMOLED full HD display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and pixel density of 386 PPI. The display has the pixels arranged in a Pentile Matrix. It has saturated colours, which is a hallmark of any AMOLED display. The viewing angles are very wide, with distortion happening only at the extreme edges of the viewing angles.
Samsung packs in some preset screen modes and controls to set the screen as per individual preferences. The display is amply bright. The auto-brightness mode really cranks up the brightness which exceeds the levels that can be set manually. This help in sunlight legibility and the display is easily readable even in direct sunlight. The super-AMOLED display supports a wide native colour gamut in addition to a significantly higher colour saturation usually associated with AMOLED displays. The big screen is ideal for watching movies as well as playing games.
The primary camera on the Samsung Galaxy C7 Pro is a 16.0-megapixel shooter with a bright f/1.9 aperture with Phase Detection Auto-Focus (PDAF) and is supported by the dual-tone LED flash. It can record videos up to 1080p@30fps. This camera doesn’t feature any sort of image stabilization, neither Optical or Electronic. Images clicked in daylight or under ideal lighting conditions come out really well. The 16.0-megapixel sensor captures a good level of details and has accurate colours. The images are sharp and crystal-clear. The dynamic range isn't that great. In tricky light situations, the centre-weighted average metering blows highlights to keep the centre of the frame well lit.
The HDR mode works really well most of the time and delivers evenly-lit pictures. Pictures clicked in low light feature a bit more noise and there is a bit of smudging and patchiness in the finer details due to aggressive image processing by the C7 Pro. But the photos are quite usable and there’s also a capable ‘Night Mode’ which clicks multiple images and combines them, like HDR mode, to deliver cleaner images. Overall, it is a very capable camera. The selfie camera is also a 16.0-megapixel camera with the same bright f/1.9 aperture. This results in really good selfies under most lighting conditions. All-in-all, both the cameras on the Samsung Galaxy C7 Pro are quite competent and deliver good, clear images.
The Samsung Galaxy C7 Pro is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm MSM8953 Pro Snapdragon 626 CPU clocked at 2.2GHz. It is ably supported by the Adreno 506 GPU. This phone features 4GB of RAM and a generous 64GB of built-in storage, which can be further expanded up to 256GB through the hybrid dual-SIM slot.
The Samsung Galaxy C7 Pro runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box. But it is soon expected to be upgraded to Android 7.0 Nougat. It scores 1,228 in the Basemark OS II 2.0 and a 67,540 in AnTuTu 6 benchmarks which put it squarely in the middle of the rest of the devices with similar specifications. In the GFX 3.1 Manhattan benchmark, the C7 Pro scores 6.1 in the 1080p offscreen test and again a 6.1 in the onscreen test. In the Basemark ES 3.1 / Metal benchmark, it scores 137. These scores put the Samsung Galaxy C7 Pro somewhere near the bottom of the list.
But in actual usage, the Samsung Galaxy C7 Pro works extremely well in day-to-day usage. The C7 Pro can run most of the games available in the Play Store. The games all play smoothly. Extended gaming sessions generate some heat, but nothing up to unbearable levels. This is expected and does nothing to degrade the gaming performance. But the phone does tend to get a bit hot while charging. The fingerprint scanner is quite fast and works really well. The Samsung Galaxy C7 Pro has a stereo speaker arrangement which uses the earpiece as one of the speakers to deliver the stereo output. While this is better than having only one speaker, it is not a balanced arrangement of the speakers. The big 3300mAh battery powers the C7 pro to make it last throughout the day, even with heavy usage. The performance review of the Samsung Galaxy C7 Pro makes it out to be an able performer which runs quite smoothly in day-to-day usage.
