Nokia needs no introduction in the mobile world. They are the pioneers in this field with many firsts to their name, including the first ever camera on a phone. Even though Nokia Phones fell behind and eventually died out, Nokia’s feature phones are still available and are the phones of choice for many people. The Nokia 105 DS is one such feature phone from Nokia which is made for calling. It packs in some important calling features like dual-SIM support and a big 800mAh battery. Even in today’s hyper-connected world of 3G and 4G speeds, it is indeed surprising that feature phones are finding their places in people’s pockets.
This phone doesn’t even have a camera, neither does it have an expandable storage card slot. But, it offers full value to people who choose to remain off the connectivity grid and simply use their phones for what they are primarily meant for. Calling. The Nokia 105 DS is available for a price of Rs. 1,495/- in online stores. Let us take an in-depth look at this phone through this review.
The Nokia 105 DS is a simple phone. The interface is quite basic and simple to use. There is almost no learning curve involved in the usage of this phone. This phone is available in two distinctive colours; black and cyan. The back panel is removable and gives access to the 800 mAh battery and the dual SIMs. There is no expandable storage, so there’s no memory card slot in there. The back panel features a matte finish and carries the glossy Nokia branding right in the centre. It is subtle, but at the same time it stands out. The loudspeaker grill sits on the top part of the back panel. It is made up of a series of drilled holes arranged in a pill shape. There is no camera cut-out as this phone does not include a camera in its specifications list. At 14.1mm, the phone is quite chunky.
Over at the front, there’s the 1.4inch LCD display. The earpiece sits atop this display. There is no front camera either. Below the display sit the two action buttons, the call-receive and call-end buttons, the four-way navigation key, and the OK button. The OK button is big and it is bordered by a small raised lip, which helps it stand out in the black surroundings. The keys on the alphanumeric keypad are rubberized and are soft to touch. There is very little spacing between two keys. The keys are easy to press and have a very good tactile feel. Typing is a smooth experience on this keypad. The keypad is black on both the colour variants. The primary microphone is located on the lower lip of the front face below the keypad. There is a LED flashlight located on the top edge of the phone which works as a torch when required. Overall, the design review of the Nokia 105 DS makes a good impression.
The Nokia 105 DS sports a 1.4” LCD display which features the resolution of 128 x 128 pixels, which gives it a pixel density of 129 PPI. The display is decent for this price range and is bright enough for day-to-day usage. But, it is not bright enough to be visible easily under direct sunlight. Colours are well-saturated. The display serves its purpose of displaying calls and short messages.
The Nokia 105 DS does not feature any camera on board.
The Nokia 105 DS is a no-frills feature phone which is made for calling. The 1.4” display is non-touch. The phone just sails through day-to-day usage with no lags or stutters. It has 4MB RAM and 4MB of internal storage. The call quality on the Nokia 105 DS is excellent. Calls can be heard clearly on both sides of the call. There’s FM radio included, which provides hours of entertainment and news updates. The 800mAh battery powers the phone for 16 hours of talk-time and 600 hours of standby time. The performance review of this phone makes it be a strong performer despite some major exclusions.
