 INTRODUCTION

Hello, blackberry phone lovers here is the bad news for you. The BlackBerry DTEK50 may be the last phone from the Blackberry Company which seemed to exit the business and concentrate more on its software developing business.

Blackberry has been the heart of many in the past decade but continuous failing to sell the products it decided finally to exit from the smartphone business. Besides the bad news let’s talk about the performance review of the BlackBerry DTEK50.

DESIGN

By looking at this phone you might be thinking that this phone looks eerily familiar to the other phone that you may have already seen and that’s because the design is made with the reference to the TCL design that Alcatel used for idol. Which curved at the top and bottom, rounded corners and flat sides.

It also has the same dual front facing speakers and dual rear-facing cameras. However, the speaker grill is very tiny which is prone to getting dust trapping inside. The difference between the Idol 4 and the blackberry is the rear case where it comes with a textured back rather than the glass panel. Feels really nice. The device doesn’t attract fingerprints and gives the phone a lot of grips.

blackberry dtek50 design

The general shape of the DTEK50 reminds me of the Nexus 4 from the back side. I definitely loved the design. It is simple to clean and comfortable to hold and use in one hand. And the thin size bezels. And thin top and bottom chin. On the top of the phone, you will find the power point, micro-USB port on the bottom. And on the right side is the sim/micro sd card slot for extra storage.

The volume rocker and what appears to be the power key but instead this is what blackberry calls the convenience key. The power button is located on the upper left side of the phone. The placement is typical and very tough to get used to. I like to call it the inconvenience Key. The dimensions of the design are 147 x 72.5 x 7.4 mm. The weight of the device is 135grams.

DISPLAY

Blackberry DTEK50 comes with a 5.2-inch display made of IPS panel giving around 16M colors. It is packed with 1080 x 1920 pixels resolution. The body to screen ratio is 69.9%. It is a multi-touch capacitive screen. It comes with a pixel density of 424ppi. Available Scratch-resistant glass, oleophobic coating for protection.

The device has a very good display which knocks your socks off. It is bright enough to see outdoors. Has decent viewing angles and a good amount of color and contrast without being oversaturated.

BlackBerry DTEK50 display

The 1080p resolution also works perfectly fine for the screen size. There is plenty of sharpness where graphics and text are easy to read and watching videos web browsing and playing games is still a very good and pleasurable experience.

FEATURES

Blackberry DTEK50 is a single SIM smartphone running OS Android OS, v6.0 (Marshmallow). It is powered by Octa-core (4x1.5GHz Cortex-A53 & 4x1.2GHz Cortex-A53) with Qualcomm MSM8952 Snapdragon 617 chipset in addition with Adreno 405 GPU. It has an internal memory of 16GB and RAM of 3GB.

The expandable memory provided up to 256GB. Having primary camera of 13 MP, f/2.0 with phase detection autofocus, dual-LED (dual tone) flash. Consisting of additional features such as Geo-tagging, touch focus, face detection, HDR, panorama.

Stereo speakers are given. Wi-Fi, Hotspot, Bluetooth, GPS options are available. 8MP Secondary camera is provided for taking selfies and video calling. Accelerometer, gyro, proximity, compass sensors are present. It has 2610mAh li-ion non-removable battery. The device supports 4G.

PERFORMANCE

Last year blackberry has come with the BlackBerry priv which is an android device which comes with some good things but not a smash hit. Now they have again come with the BlackBerry DTEK50. And they claimed this to be the world’s most secure smartphone. But the sound quality of the speakers is actually good.

They are loud and don’t get distorted even at the max volume and because of the speakers are also mirrored on the back. You can put this phone face up or face down without any deterioration of the sound quality. It comes with completely customizable shortcut keys. It has double tap to wake and double tap to sleep so you can avoid using the poorly placed power button.

The double tap to wake up is a little bit slow and sometimes doesn’t respond on the first try. Touch response is good. It opens apps quickly. You can multi-task without much of a problem. There is occasional stutter from time to time but that is not a big deal. Gaming is where you will notice a lot of hiccups.

BlackBerry DTEK50 perfomence

Games are playable but game load times can be pretty long and there it tends to be a lot of choppiness even on some basic games like Pokémon go. This happens particularly if there are a lot of graphics one time. I have the quick charger which is easy to fill.

CAMERA

On the rear, there is a 13MP camera with many features. As far as the camera app goes it is pretty basic. It doesn’t offer any extra shooting modes that offer extra shooting modes beyond the standard video. It does have a bunch of live filters fills in. it does have HDR auto and built in manual mode for controlling.

Focus and white balance, shutter speed white balance and exposure. For the photography, you really need to have a very good light even then there is a multiple lack of sharpness and detail when zooming in. It does have good color reproduction while shooting outdoors and in a well-lit area. In low light, it comes to the breakdown point. The camera constantly focuses making difficult to take a photo.

BlackBerry DTEK50 came

When finally you do take a photo. There will be usually very noisy and the images look very soft and muddy. The front camera is also not that notable but it can take some decent selfies and the notification LED light also functions as a front facing flash. But the results are not that great and it gives an average rated performance.

VERDICT

The Blackberry DTEK50 is not about the performance, camera, design and the display. The device is all about the software and the security which comes along with it. The majority of the application come from the DTEK application which is where the phone got its name. This will show the security status and this can change over time.  You will never be worrying about the app access. The price of the device is Rs. 24,400/-.
