Celkon is a brand associated with affordable smartphones. It is one of the leading home-grown brands which manufacture affordable smartphones. Additionally, Celkon Mobiles also make feature phones. Feature phones still sell quite well despite the advancement in networks and smartphones.
The Celkon Spark is as simple as a phone can get. It has no 3G, no touch screen and no smart features to speak of.It is a device made for calling and it does that the best. It features dual SIMs and comes with an excellent battery life. The Celkon Spark is available at a price of Rs. 1,050/- in online stores.
The Celkon Spark is a simple device. It is as basic a phone can get without going back to the 90s. It sports a matte black finish all over its body, except for the chain which is finished in a glossy red paint. The phone body tapers at the bottom for a half inch or so. It gives a distinctive look to the phone. The back panel is bare except for the Celkon branding. The camera sits in a rounded-square cut-out.
The loudspeaker grill sits beside the camera. It is made up of four irregular slits stacked above each other in an asymmetrical rectangular pattern. The back panel is removable and gives access to the removable battery, the dual SIMs, and the microSD card slot. The TFT display at the front is 1.8” with a resolution of 128 x 160 pixels and a pixel density of 114 PPI. The earpiece is located above the display. Below the display are the two action buttons, the call answer and call end buttons, the four-way navigation button and the OK button.
The OK button sports a red glossy finish which is ringed by the chrome four-way navigation key. It stands out in the black surroundings and gives the phone a very sleek look. The alpha-numeric keypad also features Devnagri characters along with the English alphabets. The keys are easy to press and have a very good tactile feel. There are three LEDs on the top edge of the display, set in a glossy red plastic insert, which acts as a very bright flashlight!
The Celkon Spark features a 1.8” display which sports a resolution of 128 x 160 pixels giving it a pixel density of 114 PPI. The display is bright and colourful. Colours are well-balanced and details are smooth. The display on this phone is bright enough to be visible outdoors.
It is the size of the display that some might find problematic. At 1.8 inch it is too small by today’s standards to be of any use other than to view some SMS and the numbers in the phonebook. But to most that won’t matter as this phone is meant as a calling companion and not an entertainment device.
The main camera of the Celkon Spark is a 1.3-mgapixel shooter which captures images in a 1280 x 1024 pixels resolution and can shoot videos as well. The photos clicked in ample light and under ideal lighting conditions come out clear and well-lit. This camera does not have flash, so photos clicked in low-light or even at evening time do not come out so well. They are dark and full of noise. This camera is strictly ok for some casual need-to-capture-the-moment photography. All-in-all the camera quality is not the selling point of this phone.
The Celkon Spark is a feature phone made for calling. It has excellent call quality and a long battery life. It lacks smart features like Wi-Fi or video calling. But it does not need them for it to be useful. It doesn’t even have 3G support. The phone does not lag or feel slow in day-to-day usage. The Celkon Spark packs in a big 18mAh battery that powers the phone through two days of usage. The phone has 32MB RAM and 32MB built-in storage which can be increased to 16GB via the microSD card slot.

The Celkon Spark comes out as a practical and useful phone when it is not judged by today’s smart phone standards. It does its job well by lasting for a long time between charges and giving good clarity during phone calls. Asking anything beyond that from a phone with these specifications would be unfair.
